Modesty is a word used in many different ways and open to various interpretations.

The modesty we are concerned with as martial artists is to play down or not mention our
accomplishments.

I’m sure we all have met people who talk constantly about their achievements. Perhaps we have heard certain senior grades who mention their black belts just loud enough for everyone in the room to hear at every available opportunity, or maybe wealthy people mentioning the make and model of their prestigious car, or the size of their house to everybody they meet.

I find that the longer we train in martial arts (with an open mind) the more we realise how little we know. There is so much to learn and so many more experienced martial artists that it is very difficult to remain conceited. In some clubs it is frowned upon when students train elsewhere. Although the merits of this can be argued I feel that students can develop a false sense of their ability. The simple reason being that while ever they continue to bury their heads they never see the incredible wealth of talent outside their own dojang.
