Self discipline is the ability to force yourself to take action regardless of your emotional state. It is the corner stone of effective martial arts practice. No matter how much knowledge you have of the techniques of martial arts they
will remain just knowledge unless Having the self discipline to attend class is important but if a student simply goes through the motions when they get there then progress will be severely limited. When training starts full attention should be paid to the lesson and 100% effort given. Sometimes after a hard day at work it may be difficult to motivate yourself, it is at these times that self discipline is most important. Younger members can often be excitable and misbehave during classes. Through developing self discipline they can learn to resist the temptation to show off or act in a disruptive manner. This is yet another benefit of martial arts training that transfers to life outside the dojang. Just as muscular strength varies from person to person so too do levels of self discipline. Fortunately self discipline can be strengthened by regular exercise in just the same way as your muscles benefit from regular use. Practice should be made in a gradual but progressive manner. Just as a body builder would get no benefit from trying to lift a weight they cannot move it is equally true they will get little benefit from lifting weights that are too light. Similarly do not try something that is so difficult that you are likely to fail or something that is within your comfort zones. Stretch yourself but in a realistic manner. Next time you can't be bothered to do something that you know should be done use it as an opportunity to develop and strengthen you self discipline. When you get to a stage in a lesson where you are so tired you want to stop remind yourself of the benefits both physically and mentally of continuing to give 100%.
